Few churches in Europe carry as much religious history as the Cathedral of St. Pierre, which stands on the hill of Geneva's old town. Its Gothic core dates to the 12th century, and after Geneva embraced the Reformation in 1536, the church became a center of Calvinist worship, with John Calvin preaching there. The neoclassical west front, added in the 18th century, gives the building its distinctive profile. This glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a photo agency whose pictures documented cities and events in the early 20th century, but its record gives no date, so the year of the exposure is uncertain.
