This print shows the Capitol as Benjamin Henry Latrobe first designed it, not as it stood in 1825. Latrobe worked on the building from 1803 until 1817, and his original plan was altered after the British burned the unfinished structure in 1814. The image was published in London by R. Ackermann's Repository of Arts, a firm known for aquatints of architecture and English and foreign views, and Thomas Sutherland's hand-colored engraving reflects the British interest in the young American capital. Viewers comparing it with photographs of the later building can see how far the final design departed from Latrobe's plans.
