What sets this picture apart is that it is a photograph of a painting, not of Lincoln himself. A Bloomington, Illinois studio, Mayes, copied a portrait by an artist named Waterman, which was itself based on a photographic print from Meserve's series. The result is several steps removed from the sitter, a sign of how Lincoln's likeness was spread across the country in the decades after his death. Bloomington was a fitting place for such a copy, since the town hosted an early Republican state convention in 1856 that Lincoln attended. The seated, three-quarter pose, turned to the right, was a common format for mid-19th-century portraits meant for display in parlors and public halls.
