Unlike most views of Boston's streets and harbor on this board, this lithograph is built around a parade: a review of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, with ranks of troops spread across a wide, panoramic field. Militia reviews were major public events in nineteenth-century New England, when citizen soldiers drilled, paraded, and were inspected before crowds of spectators, often on open ground such as the Common. Color lithographs like this one were a popular way to record such occasions for townspeople who wanted to keep a memento of civic pride.
