A negative blood test does not mean a patient is cured, and this poster makes that warning its central message: treatment must continue until a doctor discharges the patient. Produced under the Federal Art Project in 1936, it belongs to the New York State health campaigns of the 1930s, which used public posters to urge people to finish long courses of treatment for venereal disease. The silkscreen color and the imagery of blood testing and the microscope reflect the program's effort to explain laboratory medicine to a general audience. A date stamp on the back, from 1939, shows the print stayed in circulation after its original run.
