A wireless telephone under test is the subject of this glass negative, which the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio, made sometime between 1918 and 1920. The years just after World War I brought rapid experimentation with radio voice transmission, much of it by military and government engineers who saw wireless telephony as a practical tool. The company's large plate negatives recorded many official and technical subjects of the period, and this one is now held by the Library of Congress. Its title comes from the company's own unverified notes, and streaks on the glass reflect deterioration in the original coatings.
