Books make the home," the slogan that gives this 1938 poster its title, was designed by Rockwell Kent, an artist known for bold woodcut illustrations and for his travels in Alaska and Greenland. His strong, simplified style suited posters meant to be read quickly from a distance. The piece reflects a Depression-era push to put books into ordinary households and to present reading as a shared domestic pleasure rather than a privilege of the educated. The Library of Congress record lists it as a promotional poster, and the gallery files it under the Works Progress Administration, the federal program that employed many artists during the 1930s.
