The title describes an elevation of a lighthouse shaft, a flat side view that sets out the tower's height, taper and wall profile without perspective. Drawings like this were working documents for engineers and builders, who used them to specify materials, dimensions and the placement of stairs, openings and lanterns. Lighthouse shafts of the 19th century were commonly built of stone, brick or iron, and comparing elevations of different towers shows how designers balanced stability against the cost of materials. The title is cut short, so the exact material and builder are not recorded here.
