The seed pod of the sacred lotus, with its green seed cavities set into a flat, honeycombed head, is a study in the plant's unusual architecture. Each cavity holds a single seed, and the pod dries and matures on a long stalk above the water, which is why botanists and gardeners have long used it to show how the lotus reproduces. Lotus seeds have been gathered as food in parts of Asia for centuries, and the plant itself appears throughout Buddhist and Hindu art, where its bloom stands for purity rising out of mud. Looking closely at the pod shows how a flower's aftermath can be as striking as the blossom.
