Few American seed firms of the 1890s printed their catalogs in color as lavishly as this 1899 chromolithograph for Bauscher's seed and plant guide, which pairs vegetables and fruit in bright, layered inks. It was copyrighted by John Bauscher, Jr., and the Library of Congress catalogs it under periodical illustrations and advertisements. Chromolithography was costly but effective for mail-order businesses, since a rural customer might choose seeds from a glossy picture alone. The print shows how seedsmen used color and produce to sell the promise of a bountiful garden.
