The record names only a Red Cross parade, with no place or date, so the scene has to be read from its title and source. The negative is a glass plate from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers in the early 20th century. Red Cross marches of that period were common during the First World War, when local chapters paraded to recruit volunteers and raise funds. The crowd and the uniforms are the details worth studying, and comparing them with dated pictures from the same collection may help narrow down when and where it was taken.
