Marching for the vote, the women in this glass negative are identified only by the title "Suffragette parade," which the Bain News Service assigned from its caption cards, so the date and location remain unconfirmed. The Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency active in New York from about 1899 into the 1930s, documented many street events of the period. Suffrage processions were among the most common subjects of the era, drawing crowds and press attention as campaigners pressed for the vote in the years before the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified in 1920.
