A tobacco parade winding through Union Square gives this glass negative its particular character, a street event caught in the lens of the Bain News Service, the New York photo agency whose staff documented city life in the early twentieth century. Union Square, at the junction of Broadway and Fourth Avenue, was a common gathering place for marches, rallies and promotions of the period, and the Bain archive holds many views of such crowds on Manhattan streets. The record gives no date, so the exact year of the parade remains uncertain, but the glass plate itself, with its sharp detail, is worth a close look for the street scene it preserves.
