The title points to the *Spirit of '76*, the famous image based on Archibald Willard's 1876 painting of a fife player and drummers marching to war, which became a favorite theme for patriotic processions. This glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the files of the Bain News Service, which distributed photographs from New York to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record does not give a date or location, and the title comes from the service's caption information, which has not been independently verified. Even so, it suggests a Revolutionary-themed pageant, a kind of civic display that was common around patriotic anniversaries.
