Michel's Store and Opera House shows a combined business and entertainment hall in Marble Falls, Texas, a town in the Hill Country that grew up around the railroad in the early 1890s. The photograph is labeled with the name E.G. Michel, and the back of the mount identifies the building as an opera house, a common feature of small Texas towns. Such halls, often built above or beside shops, hosted traveling theater troupes, dances, lectures, and community gatherings. The picture is dated only to between 1890 and 1930, so it captures a town during its early decades of growth.
