Flagg's poster ties the 1917 recruiting drive to the American Revolution. It shows a town crier in colonial dress, the figure who once spread news through village streets, calling citizens to awaken to the nation's needs. The date, April 19, marks the anniversary of the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775, which made it a fitting day for parades and rallies just after the United States entered the First World War that month. Flagg, a well-known illustrator, drew on the same patriotic style he used for his famous "I Want You" Uncle Sam poster that year.
