A recruiting poster from 1918 that asks women to apply at the U.S. Employment Service office in Richmond, Virginia, and names a training school at the University of Virginia, it is one of the more direct calls for farm labor from the war years. Herbert Paus's color design combines the American flag with farm produce, presenting food production as a patriotic duty while young men were drafted into the military. The Woman's Land Army of America trained women to fill jobs left empty by farmhands who had gone to war, and the poster shows how home-front campaigns tied agriculture to the war effort.
