Uncle Sam's stern gaze and pointing finger, under the words "I Want You for U.S. Army," make this the best-known version of a figure James Montgomery Flagg first drew in 1916. The subtitle, "nearest recruiting station," sent viewers to the local enlistment office, and the Leslie-Judge Co. copyright credits the New York publishers who issued it. Flagg reportedly based the face on his own, and the design was reproduced in the millions during the war, becoming one of the most recognized recruiting images of America's entry into World War I.
