The Bowery Mission, a Christian charity on the Bowery in lower Manhattan, is the particular place named here, and the men in line are waiting for a meal at its door. The Bowery in this period was among the city's best-known districts of poverty and cheap lodging, and missions like this one served a steady stream of men who had few other places to turn for food. The Bowery Mission was founded in 1879 by Jerry McAuley, a former prisoner who had himself recovered from alcoholism, and it grew into one of the best-known relief missions in the city. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, whose press photographs document New York street life in the early twentieth century; the date and exact year are not recorded on this negative, so the scene is best read as typical of the era rather than tied to a specific day.
