A woodpecker's storehouse is the subject here: the title describes acorns packed into holes in an old pine, a habit of the acorn woodpecker, which drills rows of cavities in trees and stores nuts in them. This print is one half of a stereograph pair from the *Gems of California Scenery* series, published around 1866, and the Library holds only this side. Albumen prints like this were viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene depth and made such nature views popular in parlors during the 1860s. The date and series details come from an older caption card and have not been independently verified.
