Wilson stands full length in a top hat and overcoat in Paris in January 1919, within weeks of arriving for the peace conference that would follow the First World War. He was the first sitting U.S. president to travel to Europe while in office, and the trip made him a central figure in negotiations over the postwar settlement. The picture is catalogued with the Woodrow Wilson Papers at the Library of Congress and was later reproduced in a 1997 visual history of the nation.
