Here the caption pairs two of the best-known fighter pilots of the First World War: Eddie Rickenbacker, the American ace, and William A. "Billy" Bishop, the Canadian airman who won the Victoria Cross. The title comes from the Bain News Service's own notes, which were never verified, and the record gives no date, so the pairing is a lead for research rather than settled fact. Bain's agency sent out many news pictures of public figures in the 1910s and 1920s, and this glass negative belongs to that body of work.
