This glass negative is catalogued under the name of Capt. Charles Nungesser, the French First World War fighter pilot whose aerial victories and wartime wounds made him one of France's best-known airmen. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption data the Bain News Service supplied, which the Library of Congress has not independently verified. Bain, a New York news photo agency, sent its pictures of public figures and events to newspapers, so the image likely served as a press portrait. Nungesser's later attempt to fly the Atlantic in 1927 made him famous worldwide, and his disappearance during that flight gave his name a second life in the news.
