Cataloged only as VIC1228, this picture is distinguished from its neighbors on the Santa Claus board by little more than its number, so its character has to be read from its subject. Santa Claus took his familiar form in the nineteenth century, when illustrators, poets and advertisers blended older Saint Nicholas traditions into a jolly, red-suited gift-giver who travels by sleigh. By the early twentieth century, photographs and printed cards carried his image into American homes each December, and he became one of the most recognizable figures of the holiday season.
