The Raleigh was one of the large hotels on Pennsylvania Avenue, the city's ceremonial boulevard, where it stood close to the Willard and other hotels that drew congressmen, lobbyists, and visiting officials. Around 1900, these establishments were central to Washington's social and political life, serving as meeting places for business and as gathering points during inaugurations and other public events. The James M. Goode Collection item records the building as it appeared at the turn of the century, when hotel architecture often combined showy façades with busy street-level entrances. Look closely at the street and the people on the sidewalk to get a sense of how the district worked at that time.
