The caption on this glass negative gives the subject as Sultan Yussuf Izeddin-Effendi, though the Bain News Service notes that the title came from unverified data, so the identification should be treated with some caution. The name points to Yusuf Izzeddin, a son of Ottoman Sultan Abdulaziz who was once regarded as a possible heir and later lived largely out of public view in Istanbul. Bain News Service photographers worked in New York from about 1899 to 1932, supplying pictures of notable visitors and newsworthy figures to the press. The negative's small glass format and its place in the Bain collection make it a useful record of how Western news photography documented distant royalty.
