Three surnames, Knapp, Chambers and Hanger, form the title of this glass negative, though the Library of Congress notes that the names come from unverified caption data and have not been confirmed against the image. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Bain's photographers recorded people, events and places of the period, and their negatives were usually captioned quickly for same-day publication. Because the record gives no date, the best guide to the picture's context is the agency's working method and the era it covers.
