Two men, Leon DeJean and J. Butler Wright, are named on this glass negative dated August 17, 1923, so the plate centers on people rather than a building or street. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded local life in the early twentieth century, made the image, and Herbert A. French gave the collection to the Library of Congress in 1947. The names come from information the company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and have not been independently verified. The plate also shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of its original coating, which affects how clearly the faces can be read.
