Louis Dembitz Brandeis, the lawyer who became the first Jewish justice of the Supreme Court, sits facing the camera in this head-and-shoulders studio portrait. The Washington, D.C., firm Harris and Ewing made the photograph, and its estimated date of 1916 places it near Brandeis's bitterly contested confirmation that year. He served on the Court until 1939 and is remembered for influential opinions on privacy and free speech. The Library later included the print in its exhibition *From Haven to Home*, which marked 350 years of Jewish life in America.
