A color photomechanical reproduction of a painted head-and-shoulders likeness, this print shows Ivan Petrovich Pavlov turned slightly to the right. Pavlov, the Russian physiologist who lived from 1849 to 1936, won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1904 for his studies of digestion, but he is best known for his work on conditioned reflexes, in which dogs learned to salivate at signals such as a metronome. Made around 1960, when his reputation was widely celebrated in the Soviet Union, the portrait reflects how his image had become a symbol of Russian science.
