Its caption promises a daring abduction and a vain attempt at rescue, and the crowds, police and seamen packed into this 1899 color lithograph suggest a street chase in New York. The poster advertised a Chinatown melodrama of the kind popular on American stages in the late 1890s, plays that traded on audiences' fascination with the city's Chinese quarter. Such productions often cast non-Chinese actors in Chinese roles and leaned on stereotypes, so the image shows how audiences were invited to see Chinatown as much as the show itself.
