The title of this 1836 lithograph puns on the name of Madame Céline Celeste, the French-born dancer, turning "celestial" into a joke about Andrew Jackson's cabinet. The print, published in New York by H.R. Robinson, names several cabinet officials, including Martin Van Buren, Lewis Cass and Levi Woodbury, along with Peggy Eaton, whose social standing had divided Washington in the early 1830s. That dispute, known as the Petticoat Affair, helped force a major cabinet reshuffle, and the hand-applied watercolor makes this a sharply pointed satire on officials who seemed more absorbed in gossip and entertainment than in governing.
