Broom making was one of the trades commonly taught to blind workers in the early 1900s, and this view records a factory where that work went on. Workshops like this one aimed to give blind men and women steady work and a livelihood, with broom making done by hand using tools, twine, and bundles of broomcorn. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. firm that documented American cities, landmarks, and industries around 1920. The glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from aging coatings, so some fine detail is softened.
