Few places in eighteenth-century Philadelphia were as central to trade as the London Coffee House, the subject of this engraving. It appeared opposite page 393 of volume one of John F. Watson's *Annals of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania* in 1845. The house stood near the Delaware waterfront at Front and Market streets, where merchants, ship captains and auctioneers traded news, cargo and credit. Watson, a local antiquarian, included scenes like this to preserve the look of colonial city life, which had largely disappeared by the 1840s. The engraving shows how a nineteenth-century writer pictured a busy colonial meeting place.
