A mechanic's work at the edge of a race track is the focus here: a driver named DePaolo sits in a pit while a crew changes a tire, on October 26, 1925. The record gives only the surname, but DePaolo likely refers to the racer Peter DePaolo, who was among the best-known drivers of the 1920s. Pit stops were still a new and unpolished part of racing then, so a scene like this shows how much hands-on work went into keeping a car running. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that supplied pictures to newspapers, made the glass negative, which shows the streaks and blemishes that come with age.
