Helen Keller is shown here in a photograph dated to about 1907, a period when she was already known well beyond her home in Alabama for learning to communicate after losing her sight and hearing in early childhood. The caption card links the picture to braille and to printing and writing systems for the blind, which points to her reading and writing as the focus. By this time Keller was attending Radcliffe College and writing for publication, and her work did much to show the public what blind and deaf people could achieve with the right teaching. The record is brief and its details are unverified, so the portrait is best read as a document of her early public career.
