Tall shelves climb nearly to the ceiling in this view of a crowded old bookshop, with ladders and narrow aisles squeezed between stacks of volumes. Interiors like this were common in city bookselling from the late nineteenth century into the early twentieth, when shops often held more stock than they had room to display. Scenes of such shops appealed to photographers and illustrators alike, since the packed shelves and dim light showed the trade at its most crowded and atmospheric. The picture is a useful record of how booksellers organized and reached their inventory before modern retail layouts took over.
