What sets this picture apart is the inscription carved into the back of a very large Franklin statue, a part of the monument that most viewers never read. Statues of Benjamin Franklin became common across the United States in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when cities and institutions honored him as a printer, scientist, diplomat and author of *Poor Richard's Almanack*. Placing a quotation on the back of a monument was a typical way to remind passersby that Franklin's words were as central to his reputation as his inventions and public service.
