This gouache is catalogued as a record of paintings and artists connected to an exhibition, and the record places it in New York around 1937 or 1938. The Federal Art Project, one arm of the Works Progress Administration, employed thousands of artists during the Depression, paying them to paint murals, posters, and easel works, and it staged shows across the city. Works like this one document that effort in color at a time when many of its activities were recorded only in black and white. The record is sparse on the artist and exact subject, so the painting's details are worth studying directly.
