Lee Magee, shown here as a St. Louis National League player, was a second baseman whose career in the early 1910s brought him to the city's ballclub. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose glass negatives were later gathered into the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Many of these baseball portraits were made for newspaper use, so they capture players in simple, direct poses. The title and the 1913 date rest on research by the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee, completed in 2006.
