Few pictures in this gallery's automobile group show a vehicle doing such urgent work. The stereograph shows wounded men being loaded into a motor ambulance on the Somme, the region of northern France where the British and French armies fought a long and costly offensive in 1916. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, issued stereo cards like this around 1918, when American audiences were following the war closely and wanted to see the front for themselves. The card's pairing of a vehicle with casualty evacuation shows how motor transport had begun to transform battlefield medicine.
