A young woman guiding a team of horses across a field anchors this 1918 color lithograph, which urges women to answer the nation's call for farm labor. It was issued for the Young Women's Christian Association's Land Service Committee and designed by Edward Penfield, one of the best-known American poster artists of his era. With many male farmhands serving overseas during the First World War, rural employers faced serious shortages, and recruiting campaigns like this one encouraged city women and students to take up farm work. Penfield's bold flat colors and simplified forms were built to read quickly from across a street.
