Bethlehem's market place is the subject here, a scene of daily trade in the town that Christian tradition names as the birthplace of Jesus. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the late 1880s that combined several lithographic stones printed from photographs and then hand-finished. It comes from a Detroit Publishing Company series of Holy Land views, issued in its 1905 catalog for travelers and armchair readers. Its layered colors suggest how the town appeared to those who never made the journey.
