Pilgrims arriving in Bethlehem at Christmas time is the subject here, a scene that the Bonfils studio in Beirut photographed many times for travelers and tourists in the Ottoman-ruled Levant. Félix Bonfils and his family ran one of the most widely sold photographic businesses in the region, and their views of holy sites were bought by visitors who wanted a record of the places they had read about in scripture. This print belongs to the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection at the Library of Congress, assembled by a journalist and his wife who traveled widely and gathered images of the wider world. Its date is given only as falling between 1890 and 1923, so the exact year remains uncertain.
