Printed in 1915, this poster advertises performances of medieval folk plays staged to raise money for the Kriegsnotspende, a German wartime relief fund. Across Germany in the early years of the war, charities organized pageants, theater evenings, and other public events, and the proceeds went to soldiers' families, the wounded, and others hit by the fighting. Medieval-style plays gave organizers a way to link local tradition with national sacrifice, and the poster's design shows how wartime graphic art borrowed older imagery to appeal to a home audience.
