Two men identified as Charles R. Crosfield and James A. Drain appear on the golf course in this 1918 to 1932 photograph, and the caption presents them as disabled World War veterans who played "par golf" despite their injuries. The Washington, D.C., area, where the picture was taken, was home to many veterans' hospitals and rehabilitation programs after the war, and recreation such as golf was often promoted as part of helping wounded men regain strength, confidence and independence. The National Photo Company made many staged pictures like this one, which were meant to show public audiences that disabled servicemen could lead active lives.
