This engraved portrait shows William Bligh, the Royal Navy officer whose name is tied to the mutiny on HMS *Bounty* in April 1789. After being set adrift with loyal crewmen, he navigated an open boat roughly 3,600 miles to Timor, a feat that made him famous in Britain. Later he served as governor of New South Wales, where his strict manner provoked the 1808 Rum Rebellion. The print is dated only to about 1800, so it likely captures his public reputation during the years when the *Bounty* story was widely told.
