A young girl with a basket anchors this small chromolithographed card, the kind schools handed to pupils as a reward for good conduct or steady attendance. Victorian schools in Britain and the United States gave out such cards in quantity, and children often collected them and pasted them into scrapbooks. Many were printed in bright color by commercial lithographers, and some also carried a merchant's name as advertising. Its sentimental scene of a child reflects the taste of the period, when flowers, pets and cheerful children turned up everywhere in popular print.
