Horace Mann appears here in a half-plate daguerreotype, turned three-quarters to the right in a head-and-shoulders view. Mann reshaped public schooling in Massachusetts as secretary of its board of education, where he championed free common schools supported by public taxes. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio at some point between 1844 and 1859, and its subject is confirmed by an engraving by J.C. Buttre that appeared in Barnard's 1859 biography. The sitter's name and the number 106 are scratched on the back of the plate, a detail that helps trace its history.
