Wellesley College's Main Building, the central structure of the young women's college in Massachusetts, is the subject here, shown in a c1901 photochrom print. The Detroit Photographic Co., later known as the Detroit Publishing Co., made the picture, and it was part of an album the firm kept as a catalog for its sales office. Photochrom was a color process that printed from photographs using stone lithography, and it gave views like this one a soft, painted look. The building, which opened with the college in the 1870s, served as the campus's heart for decades before it burned in 1914.
